When the System Is the Problem: Burnout, Boundaries, and Systemic Change

Burnout has become an epidemic across helping professions — and the standard solution is always the same: set better boundaries, practice self-care, do more yoga. But what if we've been thinking about boundaries all wrong?

In this talk, Jessica Chevrier draws on systems theory and clinical practice to reframe burnout as a systemic injury, not an individual failure. Rather than dismissing boundaries as an inadequate fix, she reframes them as a powerful individual act with systemic reach — a way to protect yourself while sending ripples of change through the larger system around you.

This presentation has resonated with crisis center directors, judges, prosecutors, school district leadership, and interdisciplinary court teams — any professional working in high-demand systems where the costs of burnout are highest.

Attendees leave with a new framework for understanding burnout and a more empowering relationship with their own boundaries.
